12 across 6 down – wasting time

there are 72 square tiles on the ceiling of this room. i’d say each is about 2 feet square. there is also a column that goes across the middle of the room that is probably another 3 feet wide. i’d estimate this room is about 24′ by 13′. give or take a couple feet.

a girl is talking on her cell. she has left the room yet i can still hear her talking outside. what she is saying isn’t audible. not because i can’t hear it, but because i choose not to pay attention.

the silence is filled the hum of a few computer fans. at times, one of the fans spins loudly but only for a few seconds. in the distance, i hear fingers typing; my own and others. then there’s a mouse click here and there.

25 computers with twenty-five keyboards and 25 monitors and twenty five mice scattered on 25 mouse pads.

3 students.

two paintings or at least i think they’re painting decorate the far wall. there are 99 full boxes in the painting on the left. 56 on the right. white black and yellow, and red and yellow. under one painting is some writing. from where i’m sitting, it’s illegible to me. i’d assume it’s about the painter.

sitting offcenter between the paintings is a clock. the secondhand spins almost faster than i feel like it should. the minute hand creeps close to 2.

the flourescent ceiling lights hang above my head. one of the 8 is not working. hanging also from the ceiling on the column is a projector. it faces the front wall. i wonder how often it’s used.

i wonder the same about the whiteboard that it’s facing.

2 students.

the windows are closed. i can make out the yellow glow of street lamps behind the blinds. the sun was still out when i entered the library. the sun must be setting.

the day is ending. this lab is closing. so are my eyes. but i have a class to go to.

1 student.

more on tv

there’s this jack in the box commercial that aired during the superbowl. jack’s son is speaking in front of the school. he says “i wanna be a vegetarian. vegetarians are the best.” cracks me up every time i see it.

vegetarians can heal dogs

to the surprise of no one, jack in the box is my least favorite fast food restaurant. there’s just nothing to eat there. coming in second probably is mcdonalds.

another commercial from the superbowl is about the lexus IS. i think this is one of the most misleading ads on tv. the premise of the ad makes it seem like a lexus IS can accelerate faster than gravity.

through physics, with a wheel driven land car, this is an impossibility. in actuality, the car in the commercial is already in motion before the other car is dropped.

in reality, most if not all modern cars can do what the commercial claims as long as their initial speed is high enough.

stupid commercial; drives me nuts whenever i see it.

a couple website changes. they’re mostly cosmetic, but here’s the list
- background pic
- changed rss to have full descriptions not just partial
- added a few labels to past entries so the rss link is slightly off
- changed orange to a blue/green
- changed certain colors
- added blue to my necklace
- added labels link
- added side pictures

carpc pictures

pictures i’d been meaning to upload for some time

car in dashboardcomputer in glove compartment

lcd closed

lcd opened

finished this version of the carputer awhile ago but i just didn’t get around to post the pics of it.

i realized, using the top of the box i bought at the container store, the motherboard/cpu fit perfectly in the dashboard after ripping out the back of the glove compartment. i opted for inside the dash over the trunk because the extension vga cable i bought sent a bad signal causing double vision on the lcd. the miniplug extension caused alternator whine too.

negatives about the computer being in the dash
- i can hear the fan when the car is quiet
- i can hear the hard drive spinning at times
- not sure if there’s room for a dvd player
- i can’t use the glove compartment

i’ll live with it for now

next version

- add the dvd drive
- move it to trunk
- use an amp for sound
- change OS to something linux based
- add switch to turn on the computer without turning the car on
- add switch to turn off the computer without turning off the car

a couple more notes
- i had a wireless-b usb dongle on the computer but it would drain my car battery. i kept having low battery issues with my car before i removed it. i only used it to transfer files from my home pc to my carpc but the transfer was much too slow. just taking out the hard drive and using my external hard drive enclosure makes transferring much faster.
- i broke the touchscreen a couple weeks ago in fit of rage. i sent in for a replacement and it was a really easy fix.
- i’ve been using talisman as my desktop shell but it makes loading the computer take extra long. i don’t like that. the reason i decided against using linux before was because of the need for the wireless-b usb dongle but now that’s not an issue.

come on down!

“100 men were surveyed,
what country has the most intriguing woman?”
france
good answer, good answer

“oh.. that’s the number 2 answer. you have a chance to take it, what country has the most intriguing woman?”
london
incredulous clapping from her family

i wonder about people that get their 15 minutes by being on a game show on tv. i wonder.. those that do something stupid on tv, do they regret it? you see those reality shows and the recaps of people years after the show, and a trend i notice is all the fat people tend to lose significant amounts of weight.

for some reason, i cringe whenever i see koreans on tv. Not the two from Lost. They don’t bother me. but like… Paul Kim. I took a nap yesterday and woke up with the tv on in time to see the first person to be kicked of american idol this year.

when he talked, i thought, what a goober.

london…

this was the first time i’ve watched family feud in a while. i used to like that one short host from years ago; the one before louie anderson. what happened to al? why isn’t he the host anymore. what you may know is the current host was a character on seinfeld who was elaine’s boss. he played a fictional j. peterman from the j. peterman catalog. what you may not know is that the j. peterman catalog was doing poorly and they approached the guy from seinfeld and now he’s on the board of the catalog and it’s now doing ok.

same question, another woman was asked.
“what country has the most intriguing woman?”
africa

*roll eyes

conclusion: tv makes you dumb

the top answer, btw, was obviously the US

update: so i told about the family feud thing at church yesterday. not really because i thought it was funny, but to see what people would say. surprising how many people think london is a country.

little annoyances

generally, i sit in the back of every class.

1.
as the teacher was going over the syllabus yesterday, the guy two seats in front of me needed to nervously ask a question. he would raise his hand, but (assuming he was trying not to be rude) lowered his hand every time the teacher looked the student’s way when the teacher was mid sentence. this teacher likes to talk without having breaks in his sentences.

this charade went on for at least five minutes.

i just looked at the guy next to me and rolled my eyes.

2.
i realize i read a lot. i just don’t read a lot of books. i read the newspaper. i read sports articles on the net.

quoted from an article about the jason kidd

Nets president Rod Thorn told ESPN Insider’s Chris Sheridan on Sunday that there was only a “5 percent chance” that he would trade anyone on his roster by Thursday’s deadline.”

5%? How does the Nets president get that number? Can he perceive exactly 20 different realities and in only one of those is kidd traded?

the use of number percentages on arbitrary terms is simply ludicrous.

3.
people that wear bluetooth headsets all the time.

i don’t think i have to say more about that

4.
what is up with this weather?

5.
i don’t care that derek jeter and a-rod are no longer best friends. i don’t care britney spears checked out of rehab. i don’t care where anna nicole gets buried.

side notes -
1. as i predicted, joanne gets ice cream for signing my guestbook
2. though sarah was second, she’ll get ice cream just because it was her birthday

five brownie points to the person that can tell me where i stole this background from. if i counted up all the brownie points i gave, i think gloria would have the most. i’ll keep track of brownie points (for no reason other than to keep track) i’m not exactly sure what brownie points are. i’m assuming it has to do with the female equivalent of cub scouts.
